PDF to Word on Windows

Files save to your Downloads folder by default. If you would rather choose the location each time, turn on "Ask where to save each file" in your browser's download settings and you will get a normal Save As dialogue.

The tool itself behaves identically regardless of what you are running it on. The same options, the same validation, the same progress reporting and the same output — a file produced on a Windows PC is byte-for-byte equivalent to one produced anywhere else, because the same code does the work in both cases.

That consistency is worth something practical. Start a job on a Windows PC and finish it on a different device, or hand the page to a colleague on another platform, and neither of you has to learn a different interface or account for a difference in behaviour.

Your file is posted to PDFNova's own API route, which forwards it to a document conversion service over an encrypted connection and polls that service until the job finishes. The resulting DOCX is streamed back through the same route to your browser, where it is turned into a download.

The conversion itself involves interpreting the PDF's positioned text runs and reconstructing document structure from them — grouping glyphs into words and lines, lines into paragraphs, and detecting headings, lists and table cells from spacing and alignment. This inference is why simple layouts convert cleanly and complicated ones need review.

PDF to Word is the one tool on PDFNova that cannot run on your own device, and we would rather be direct about that than let you assume otherwise. Reconstructing an editable document from a PDF requires layout analysis that is not practical in a browser, so your file is sent to a conversion service, processed there, and returned to you.

The transfer happens over an encrypted HTTPS connection in both directions. The file passes through PDFNova's API route only to reach the conversion service — it is not written to disk here, not logged, and not retained after the response has been sent.

If a document is sensitive enough that you would rather it never left your device at all, this is the tool to avoid. Every other tool on this site processes files entirely in your browser, and those pages say so because it is true of them.

The page is served over HTTPS, and the file transfer to and from the conversion service is encrypted in both directions. Your document is streamed through rather than stored, so no copy is written to disk on PDFNova's side.

Uploads are validated before they are forwarded: the file must be a PDF and must be within the size limit. Anything else is rejected with a clear message rather than being passed on.

For documents where the transfer itself is the concern, the alternative is to keep the PDF as a PDF — the merge, split, compress, rotate, watermark, sign and image conversion tools all run entirely on your device and never transmit anything.

Being clear about limits is more useful than a feature list that quietly omits them. This tool sends your file to an external conversion service rather than processing it on your device; scanned PDFs without an existing text layer cannot be converted to editable text; and complex layouts require manual correction afterwards.

If you need capabilities beyond that — redaction, PDF/A conformance, OCR, or scripted batch processing across thousands of documents — dedicated desktop software genuinely earns its licence fee, and this is not trying to replace it.
