Watermark PDF on Mobile
Stamp text such as DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL across every page.

A single PDF file, up to 100 MB. Files are processed on this device.
Documents arrive on phones now. An attachment comes in, it needs handling, and you are nowhere near a computer. This page works properly on a phone or tablet — not a cut-down version of the tool, but the same one with the same options.
There is no app to install. That avoids the usual mobile PDF experience, where a Play Store or App Store search returns a wall of advertising-supported apps that want broad storage permissions and quietly upload your documents to process them.
Tapping the upload area opens your device's standard file picker, so you can pull a document from local storage, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or any other provider you have connected. Everything after that happens on the phone itself.
A watermark says something about a document that the document itself does not: that it is a draft, that it is confidential, that it belongs to you, or that it is a copy rather than the original. Adding one before you circulate a file is a small habit that prevents a surprising number of misunderstandings.
This tool stamps text across every page of a PDF. Choose the wording, how large it should be, how transparent, and where it sits — diagonally across the middle in the classic style, centred, or tucked into a corner where it will not obstruct the content.
How to watermark a PDF file
Add your PDF
Drop in the document you want to mark.
Type the watermark text
Common choices are DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, COPY, or your organisation's name. Standard Latin characters are supported.
Choose the placement
Diagonal across the middle is the traditional look. Centred, bottom right and top left are available when you need the content to stay legible.
Set size and opacity
48 point at 0.3 opacity is a good starting point for a full-page diagonal stamp. Drop the size for a corner mark.
Apply and download
Press Add watermark, check the preview, and download the marked document.
Why use this watermark pdf tool
No app required
Works in your mobile browser with nothing to install, no permissions to grant and no advertising.
No data allowance used
Files are processed on the device, so nothing is uploaded and nothing counts against a metered connection.
Touch-friendly layout
Single-column layout with fingertip-sized controls and no horizontal scrolling on small screens.
Every page, in one pass
The stamp is applied to all pages, so a reader cannot end up with an unmarked page halfway through the document.
Placement that respects the text
Position is calculated from the actual width of your text at the size you chose, so long words stay on the page instead of running off the edge.
Transparency you control
Set the opacity anywhere from barely visible to solid, so the mark reads clearly without making the document underneath hard to follow.

When people use this
Circulating a draft
Marking a document DRAFT stops an unfinished version being mistaken for the final one when it gets forwarded on.
Sharing confidential material
A CONFIDENTIAL stamp is a visible reminder of how a document should be handled, and it survives printing and photocopying.
Marking your own work
Adding your name or your organisation's name makes it obvious where a document originated when it is shared onward.
Distinguishing copies
Stamp COPY on duplicates so the original signed version is never in doubt.
What to know about running this on a phone
The interface adapts to a small screen: controls are laid out in a single column, buttons are sized for a fingertip rather than a cursor, and no horizontal scrolling is required at any point.
Because processing happens on the device, nothing is charged against your mobile data allowance beyond loading the page. Handling a 40 MB scanned document on a metered connection costs you nothing extra, which is not true of tools that upload.
Phones have less memory to spare than laptops, so very large documents are the one place you may hit a limit. If a big job fails, close other browser tabs and try again — that usually resolves it. Operations that re-render every page, such as compression and image conversion, are also noticeably slower on a phone than on a computer, though progress is reported throughout so you always know it is working.
One practical tip: keep the tab in the foreground while a long job runs. Mobile browsers aggressively suspend background tabs to save battery, which can stall processing until you return to it.
How watermarking works
The document is loaded with pdf-lib and Helvetica Bold is embedded into it. For each page, the tool measures how wide your text will be at the chosen point size, then uses that measurement together with the page dimensions to work out a position that keeps the whole string on the page.
The text is drawn into the page's content stream with the opacity and rotation you selected. Because this is a drawing operation rather than a re-render, everything already on the page is preserved exactly — the watermark is simply painted over the top of it.
Privacy
Your files are not uploaded. When you add a PDF file, your browser reads it from your device into the memory of the tab you are looking at, and the watermark pdf operation runs there using your own processor. Nothing is transmitted to any server at any point.
That means there is no file for anyone to store, no retention policy to trust, and no deletion schedule to take on faith. The document exists only in the memory of an open browser tab, and it is released the moment you close it, reload the page, or press start over.
The site uses standard anonymous analytics to count page views and how often each tool is used. Those events record which tool ran and whether it succeeded — never a file name, never file contents, and never anything that could identify a document or the person processing it.
No account is required, so no personal information is collected. There is no profile, no history and nothing tied to an identity, because no identity was ever created.
Security
The strongest security property this tool has is structural: your file never travels anywhere, so there is no transmission to intercept and no server-side copy to breach. This is not a policy that could change — it is a consequence of where the code runs.
You can verify it in about thirty seconds. Open your browser's developer tools with F12, select the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see the page's scripts load — including the PDF libraries, which are fetched on demand the first time a tool runs — and then nothing further. No request carrying your document is ever made.
For a stronger test, disconnect from the network once the page has loaded. The tool will keep working exactly as before, which is only possible because nothing is being sent.
Uploaded files are validated in the browser before anything runs: the extension must match what the tool accepts, the file must not be empty, and it must be within the size limit. Malformed documents produce a clear error and a retry option rather than a silent failure.
What this tool does not do
Being clear about limits is more useful than a feature list that quietly omits them. Only text watermarks are supported, using Latin-1 characters, in a single colour, at one position per document.
If you need capabilities beyond that — redaction, PDF/A conformance, OCR, or scripted batch processing across thousands of documents — dedicated desktop software genuinely earns its licence fee, and this is not trying to replace it. For the specific job of producing a watermarked PDF, everything you need is on this page.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this work on both iPhone and Android?
- Yes. Safari and Chrome on iOS, and Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet or Edge on Android. The tool and its output are identical on both.
- Where do files go after I download them on a phone?
- On iOS, into the Downloads folder in the Files app. On Android, into your device's Downloads folder where any file manager will find it. From there the normal share sheet sends them anywhere you need.
- Will a large document work on a phone?
- Usually. Phones have less spare memory than laptops, so very large files are where you may hit a limit. Closing other tabs first helps, and splitting a very long document into sections is a reliable fallback.
- Can the watermark be removed by whoever receives the file?
- The text is drawn into the page content stream, so it is not a layer that can simply be toggled off in a reader. Someone determined and technically capable could still edit it out with professional PDF software — treat a watermark as a clear signal of intent, not as a security control.
- Can I use an image or a logo as the watermark?
- Not currently — this tool stamps text only. If you need a logo, one workable approach is to add it with the Edit PDF tool on the pages that matter most.
- Why were some characters dropped from my watermark?
- The standard PDF fonts used here cover the Latin-1 character set. Characters outside that range, including most non-Latin scripts and some typographic punctuation, are removed rather than causing the whole operation to fail. Smart quotes and dashes are converted to their plain equivalents automatically.
- Will the watermark cover up my content?
- That is what the opacity setting is for. At 0.3 the mark is clearly visible while the text underneath stays entirely readable. If you need the content completely unobstructed, choose a corner placement and a smaller size.
- Does watermarking change the rest of the document?
- No. The text is drawn on top of each existing page. Everything already in the document — text, images, links — is left exactly as it was.
