A single PDF file, up to 100 MB. Files are processed on this device.

If you are on a Windows PC and need to watermark a PDF file, this page is the whole solution. Nothing to install, nothing to buy, and no account — add your file and the tool is ready.

Windows still has no built-in PDF editing at all. Edge will display a PDF and let you scribble on it, but it cannot merge, split, compress or convert. Everything else means installing third-party software, which on a work machine usually means an IT request, and on a personal machine means picking your way past installers bundled with browser toolbars and trial nags.

This runs in Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Brave or Opera on Windows 10 and Windows 11. There is no .exe or .msi, no User Account Control prompt, no administrator password and no entry added to Programs and Features. That makes it particularly useful on a managed work laptop where installing anything is simply not permitted.

A watermark says something about a document that the document itself does not: that it is a draft, that it is confidential, that it belongs to you, or that it is a copy rather than the original. Adding one before you circulate a file is a small habit that prevents a surprising number of misunderstandings.

This tool stamps text across every page of a PDF. Choose the wording, how large it should be, how transparent, and where it sits — diagonally across the middle in the classic style, centred, or tucked into a corner where it will not obstruct the content.

How to watermark a PDF file

  1. Add your PDF

Drop in the document you want to mark.

  2. Type the watermark text

Common choices are DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, COPY, or your organisation's name. Standard Latin characters are supported.

  3. Choose the placement

Diagonal across the middle is the traditional look. Centred, bottom right and top left are available when you need the content to stay legible.

  4. Set size and opacity

48 point at 0.3 opacity is a good starting point for a full-page diagonal stamp. Drop the size for a corner mark.

  5. Apply and download

Press Add watermark, check the preview, and download the marked document.

Why use this watermark pdf tool

No Windows software to install

No application, no package and no app store download. The watermark pdf tool runs in the browser already on your Windows device.

Identical output everywhere

The same code runs on every platform, so a file produced on a Windows PC is identical to one produced anywhere else.

Standard download handling

Finished files go to your usual downloads location and behave like any other file on Windows.

Every page, in one pass

The stamp is applied to all pages, so a reader cannot end up with an unmarked page halfway through the document.

Placement that respects the text

Position is calculated from the actual width of your text at the size you chose, so long words stay on the page instead of running off the edge.

Transparency you control

Set the opacity anywhere from barely visible to solid, so the mark reads clearly without making the document underneath hard to follow.

Features

  • Four placementsDiagonal, centred, bottom right or top left.
  • Adjustable sizeAnything from 8 to 144 point.
  • Adjustable opacityFrom 0.05 for a whisper to 1.0 for a solid stamp.
  • All pages coveredApplied to every page of the document automatically.
  • Text stays selectableThe underlying document content is not flattened or re-rendered.

When people use this

Circulating a draft

Marking a document DRAFT stops an unfinished version being mistaken for the final one when it gets forwarded on.

Sharing confidential material

A CONFIDENTIAL stamp is a visible reminder of how a document should be handled, and it survives printing and photocopying.

Marking your own work

Adding your name or your organisation's name makes it obvious where a document originated when it is shared onward.

Distinguishing copies

Stamp COPY on duplicates so the original signed version is never in doubt.

Using the watermark pdf tool on Windows

Files save to your Downloads folder by default. If you would rather choose the location each time, turn on "Ask where to save each file" in your browser's download settings and you will get a normal Save As dialogue.

The tool itself behaves identically regardless of what you are running it on. The same options, the same validation, the same progress reporting and the same output — a file produced on a Windows PC is byte-for-byte equivalent to one produced anywhere else, because the same code does the work in both cases.

That consistency is worth something practical. Start a job on a Windows PC and finish it on a different device, or hand the page to a colleague on another platform, and neither of you has to learn a different interface or account for a difference in behaviour.

How watermarking works

The document is loaded with pdf-lib and Helvetica Bold is embedded into it. For each page, the tool measures how wide your text will be at the chosen point size, then uses that measurement together with the page dimensions to work out a position that keeps the whole string on the page.

The text is drawn into the page's content stream with the opacity and rotation you selected. Because this is a drawing operation rather than a re-render, everything already on the page is preserved exactly — the watermark is simply painted over the top of it.

Privacy

Your files are not uploaded. When you add a PDF file, your browser reads it from your device into the memory of the tab you are looking at, and the watermark pdf operation runs there using your own processor. Nothing is transmitted to any server at any point.

That means there is no file for anyone to store, no retention policy to trust, and no deletion schedule to take on faith. The document exists only in the memory of an open browser tab, and it is released the moment you close it, reload the page, or press start over.

The site uses standard anonymous analytics to count page views and how often each tool is used. Those events record which tool ran and whether it succeeded — never a file name, never file contents, and never anything that could identify a document or the person processing it.

No account is required, so no personal information is collected. There is no profile, no history and nothing tied to an identity, because no identity was ever created.

Security

The strongest security property this tool has is structural: your file never travels anywhere, so there is no transmission to intercept and no server-side copy to breach. This is not a policy that could change — it is a consequence of where the code runs.

You can verify it in about thirty seconds. Open your browser's developer tools with F12, select the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see the page's scripts load — including the PDF libraries, which are fetched on demand the first time a tool runs — and then nothing further. No request carrying your document is ever made.

For a stronger test, disconnect from the network once the page has loaded. The tool will keep working exactly as before, which is only possible because nothing is being sent.

Uploaded files are validated in the browser before anything runs: the extension must match what the tool accepts, the file must not be empty, and it must be within the size limit. Malformed documents produce a clear error and a retry option rather than a silent failure.

What this tool does not do

Being clear about limits is more useful than a feature list that quietly omits them. Only text watermarks are supported, using Latin-1 characters, in a single colour, at one position per document.

If you need capabilities beyond that — redaction, PDF/A conformance, OCR, or scripted batch processing across thousands of documents — dedicated desktop software genuinely earns its licence fee, and this is not trying to replace it. For the specific job of producing a watermarked PDF, everything you need is on this page.

Frequently asked questions

Will this work on a locked-down work PC?
Usually, yes. Because nothing is installed, there is no UAC prompt and no administrator password required, which is exactly the barrier that stops most PDF software on managed machines. The only thing that would block it is a network policy preventing access to the site.
Is the watermark pdf tool different on Windows?
No. It is the same tool with the same options and the same processing code. Only the browser and the download location differ.
Can the watermark be removed by whoever receives the file?
The text is drawn into the page content stream, so it is not a layer that can simply be toggled off in a reader. Someone determined and technically capable could still edit it out with professional PDF software — treat a watermark as a clear signal of intent, not as a security control.
Can I use an image or a logo as the watermark?
Not currently — this tool stamps text only. If you need a logo, one workable approach is to add it with the Edit PDF tool on the pages that matter most.
Why were some characters dropped from my watermark?
The standard PDF fonts used here cover the Latin-1 character set. Characters outside that range, including most non-Latin scripts and some typographic punctuation, are removed rather than causing the whole operation to fail. Smart quotes and dashes are converted to their plain equivalents automatically.
Will the watermark cover up my content?
That is what the opacity setting is for. At 0.3 the mark is clearly visible while the text underneath stays entirely readable. If you need the content completely unobstructed, choose a corner placement and a smaller size.
Does watermarking change the rest of the document?
No. The text is drawn on top of each existing page. Everything already in the document — text, images, links — is left exactly as it was.
